Human character and the virtues

While the passions articulated above are the survival strategies developed out of human evolution, they do not represent anywhere near the full potential of a human being.

Through self-observation, participation in a community, meditation and the practice of virtue on a daily basis and within a responsible spiritual tradition, the person has the opportunity to develop a human character based upon the human virtues centred ultimately on the anti-evolutionary strategy of love of your neighbour and of your world. Ironically, it is only the anti-evolutionary practice of virtue that will guarantee the ultimate survival of human beings and the species on this planet.

Modern society, especially Western culture, has elevated the passions and their associated personality types to the place once reserved for the practice of virtue and love. At the same time, it has trivialised and relativized love. Only through the conscious and deliberate practice of virtue can healing be brought to the individual psyche, the community, and the environment in which we live.
